Understanding the 2027 SPM Requirement
What Is an SPM?
A Secure Payment Module (SPM) is the encrypted card-handling component inside a fuel dispenser that protects payment data at the pump. Newer regulations require every dispenser to use a current, certified SPM to meet payment-security standards.
The 2027 Deadline
Dispensers must be upgraded to a compliant SPM before the 2027 regulatory cutoff. Sites that miss the deadline risk non-compliance penalties, payment-network certification loss, and dispensers that can no longer process secure transactions.
What's Required
Each affected dispenser needs a certified SPM installed, configured, and commissioned to the current payment-security standard. Existing hardware must be assessed for compatibility, and the upgrade must be documented for audit.
